Le favole, le fiabe, le filastrocche, prendono sempre spunto dalla realtà. Così fa Jonathan Lethem: inizia a raccontare le sue storie a partire da un indizio reale, ma poi stravolge la realtà e ci proietta in un Mondo del tutto sovvertito. Queste storie, o meglio, storielle, sono davvero carine e divertenti. Qui Lethem ci dà prova di saper maneggiare il racconto con abilità estrema. Sono storie sgusciate fuori dall’ovetto di cioccolato come quelle sorpresine di plastica, che qualsiasi bambino sa mettere insieme, basta che segua le istruzioni. Semplicità di esecuzione, dunque, ma non semplicismo letterario. Sappiamo che l’arte dello scrivere, quando raggiunge tale disarmante semplicità, ha alle sue spalle anni, se non decenni, di dura, sofferta ricerca. L’amore per la storia, per il racconto, si tinge, in queste pagine, di toni lievi e leggeri, quasi ad essere la dimostrazione che anche i Cartoons hanno una loro dignità letteraria. I personaggi sembrano ritagliati sulla carta, appunto, e sono molto stilizzati, secondo un gusto Made in America molto da grande magazzino, adatto allo shopping serale tra file e file di prodotti tutti uguali, rigorosamente di plastica, senza odore, senza vita. Sembra quasi volerci raccontare, Lethem, di un mondo nel quale le emozioni siano anch’esse state messe sottovuoto, liofilizzate e stoccate in molti contenitori con etichetta e prezzo. L’umanità che ne viene fuori, è dedita a esistenze ripetitive, monodimensionali. Non è poi tanto una sorpresa leggere queste storie: questi Cartoons siamo appunto NOI.
